The Impact of Emergency Department Use on the
Health Care System in Maryland

Sponsored by the UMBC Department of Public Policy and
The Center for Health Program Development and Management

June 7, 2007

In Maryland and across the nation, hospital emergency departments are becoming increasingly crowded as patients look to emergency rooms for non-emergency care. The public policy implications range from patient safety and payment issues to the ability of the health care system to respond to a terrorist attack or pandemic. At this forum, health and public policy experts discussed strategies to improve the delivery of emergency room services in Maryland.
